Small Spaces, Cozy Places
What do you do when you
find your perfect home with a less than perfect landscape? Our clients,
a semi-retired couple, were happy with their new home, but were less than
satisfied with the narrow lot on which it stood. Accustomed to a larger outdoor space, the couple wanted space to entertain, garden and relax.
The garden was basically
three walkways around the house. It was vital to recapture those
spaces.
We designed
a series of 'rooms' connected by 'hallways' to optimize the space. Focal
points and other visual cues serve to draw visitors out into the garden.
The rooms become progressively more intimate, starting the 'dining/living
room' and ending in the 'den'. By lifting up elevations and expanding
staircases, we were able to transform simple concrete walkways into useful
and attractive spaces.
